Finding my way back to the woods

I believe our earliest memories find their way into our artistic expression. When I was little, our family lived in a home on the edge of a temperate rainforest. From our backyard, my brother and I would climb up a steep forested trail, pulling ourselves up on branches, logs and moss banks, making our way to a sunny clearing above. I recall the sights and smells so vividly – mushrooms, spotted slugs, snails and thick tangles of vines and branches, soft, rotting cedar logs giving way to our small fingers and feet. Immense trees with heavy foliage cast shadows on the forest floor. A sense of wonder, an element of fear…these are the things I carry today in my artist’s heart. The forest remains a place of enchantment and curiosity, calling me away from the city and into the deep.
